Falmouth Week proves a hit

Falmouth Week got off to a cracking start at the weekend. From the moment the regatta week began it was clear this year’s event was going to be a success and so far it has been.

A reception on board the RFA Mounts Bay on Friday evening set the pattern for the week to come.

The commanding officer and the crew hosted a party of race officials, local dignitaries and other invited guests on board the vessel and all involved were confident of the racing to come.

On Saturday it was the popular Classics. Not officially a regatta race, more a collection of classic yachts taking to the water and showing spectators and others the huge variety of craft using the Carrick Roads for sailing.

Conditions were ideal and the return of the Falmouth Working Boards to the regatta proved a spectacular site and most under full sail battled it out round the course with the Stella of I Jenkins crossing the line first followed by the Victory with Dave Muirhead at the helm.

In the other classes there was a huge variety of vessels from small dinghies to the graceful Sunbeams and the sleek sloops sailing off shore.

Race officials wanted to bring the fun back into the week and so far they have.

“From the start of my chairmanship it was my intention to get the fun back into Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week and provide a standard of racing worthy of this great event. I never expected such a huge groundswell of support from both on and off the water, said Steve Nicholls from the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association.

Now all attention is on the rest of the week’s events, not least the Red Arrows display on Wednesday evening.

The event, sponsored by the Falmouth Harbour Commissioners is expected to bring thousands of people into town following the day’s racing.
