Falmouth Week 2007 got off to a cracking start on Saturday with the traditional Classics. The popular introduction of the regatta week saw hundreds of craft on the water from dinghies to working boats and from small yachts to ocean going vessels and although not a serious race, there was more than a competitive spirit among the crews taking part.
In good conditions there was much for spectators afloat and ashore to enjoy. The cliffside along Castle Drive and on to Pendennis Point had many people seeking good viewing points while on the water hundreds of small craft not involved in the racing made their way around the Carrick Roads.
The Falmouth Working boats under full sail provided a spectacular sight as usual, but there was much variety in the types of vessels taking part.
Cousin Jinny with G. Pearce at the helm was the first large working boat home followed by the Grace with C. Jeffery at the helm and Victory, with Dave Muirhead.
The smaller working boat fleet was won by Leila, with Dolly second and Krystal in third place.
D. Ryeng in Rainbow took the D Class just a couple of minutes ahead of the Spinaway of R. Brown while Alan Muirhead of Budock sailing his Jemalda took the E class.
advertisement D. Roberts in Melita took the F Class with J. Tetley in Carte Blanche second and J. Philip in Alkini, third while in the G Class Magpie crossed the line just two minutes ahead of Marie, skippered by Peter Sawle and Myrtle, skippered by R. Collins.
