Falmouth Week plans in hand

Plans are now well in hand for the Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week in August, a festival of sailing and shoreside events attracting thousands of people both on the water and on land.

Mark Osborn, new chairman of Pofsa, the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association responsible for much of the sailing said thousands of sailors were expected to the port during the week and there would be regattas and races to suit all standards.

"Falmouth has arguably the best sailing waters in the UK," said Mr Osborn.

"For those who have not sailed before in the Carrick Roads and the Helford River, you are missing a real treat! The expanse of water is like sailing on the open sea, but is usually much more sheltered and if you want bigger waves you can always venture into Falmouth Bay! The local area welcomes all sailing visitors, whether racing or cruising, and dinghies or keelboats. Why not bring your boat along with you on holiday and join in on our racing activities?"

Pofsa, which represents a number of yacht clubs has also created its own website which can be reached by clicking on the link below. It gives people more information about village regattas in the area, many of which have been running for over 100 years and are organised by teams of volunteers running the racing and the all-important teas and drinks afterwards.

They often include children's beach sports events too.

Falmouth Week from August 10 to August 17 includes racing in Falmouth Bay for the larger classes and in Carrick Roads for smaller and open boat classes on six days from Sunday August 12 to Friday August 17.

Saturday August 18 is designated Marks and Spencer Champagne Day with separate sailing instructions. Henri-Lloyd Dinghy Week is run by Restronguet Sailing Club from their clubhouse for six days from August 12 to 17.
