Seventeen years ago, inspired by one of the first French festivals, Douarnenez'88, a small group of like-minded individuals organised the first Falmouth Classics Regatta. There was no shortage of entries, as Falmouth is not only world renowned as home to a larger proportion of traditional boats than most ports.
The formula was set right from the start that created a relaxed mix of sailing and partying, both highly intoxicating ingredients that strike a chord with sailors across the world.
Although the "racing" is not considered the most important aspect, the prizegiving on the other hand has been undertaken by some of the best known names in the business.
Robin Knox Johnston led the way as the first prizegiver, followed by other such luminaries as Lord Hartley Shawcross, Tom Cunliffe, John Morrel, (the Beirut hostage) and Sandi Toksvig, Admiral Sir Robert Woodard and more latterly the architect of the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, MJ Long.
About ten years ago Eric Tabarlay was present, gaining a further distinction to his already formidable reputation, as being the only boat to finish the race that year, in fog and the lightest of zephyrs, in the exceptional Pen Duick IV.
Falmouth Classics, this year is being held on August 11.
For Falmouth Classics and for the Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week August 12-17, organisers will be eco friendly and will be going for a paperless online entry system. Click on link below
