Falmouth Week celebrations
The Henri-Lloyd Falmouth Week is celebrating a trio of 20th anniversaries this year. Falmouth Classics starts the week on Saturday August 9 and is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
Organisers are hoping to see a good turnout of traditional yachts although working boats will be missing due to a dispute with the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association over the course.
Falmouth Classics is a big crowd puller, and Pendennis Point and St Mawes Castle should be packed with spectators. Racing starts at 1145am, with crews returning to the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club afterwards. It is hoped that some of the Classic Superyachts taking part in the Pendennis Cup races later in the week will be out either practising or able join in a Parade of Sail.
On Tuesday evening, as part of their anniversary celebrations, Falmouth Classics are co-hosting a Regatta Evening Party for all competitors in Henri-Lloyd Falmouth Week on the Events Square outside the National Maritime Museum Cornwall.
Also on Saturday August 9 the infamous Falmouth Marine Band will be leading the Falmouth Marching Carnival, for their 20th year.
Starting at 6.30pm from Kimberley Park, the Carnival will march through the centre of Falmouth to finish at the Watersports Centre. The band says that it has something special up its sleeve to mark the occasion.
Also celebrating its 20th Anniversary is Pendennis Shipyard, now a leading employer in Falmouth as an internationally renowned superyacht builder. To mark the occasion it is sponsoring the Pendennis Cup for a series of races of some of the biggest and oldest Classic Superyachts in the world.
At least seven of these 30 metre plus beauties, built in the early 1900s, have entered and more are expected. This racing will start on Monday August 11 and goes on to Saturday, but no racing on Wednesday. The yachts will be berthed at Pendennis Marina, where they can be admired from the walkway of the Maritime Museum.
Whilst all this is going on the central part of Henri-Lloyd Falmouth Week - racing for some 350 yachts, day boats and dinghies - will be run in three separate race areas. Henri-Lloyd Falmouth Week Regatta and Henri-Lloyd Falmouth Dinghy Week run from Sunday August 10 to Friday August 15, with Falmouth Week Champagne Day on Saturday August 16.
There will be a fireworks display at 10pm on Friday August 15 sponsored by Falmouth Harbour Commissioners, and an extensive shoreside programme running all week at Events Square, the Princess Pavilion, National Maritime Museum, Pendennis Castle and throughout the town.
