A Stithians-based watersports centre has become one of the first places in Cornwall to test the water with a new catamaran.

The South West Lakes Trust's centre based at Stithians Lake has taken the plunge by purchasing a Hobie Wave catamaran, which is a lighter and more easily manageable version of previous Hobie catamarans.

Stithians is the first of the Lakes Trust's five centres across the south west to offer the Hobie Wave for hire by anyone with a certain amount of sailing experience.

Costa Hadji-Argyris, who took over as area manager at Stithians last November, said: "We're trialing it to see how successful it is - but I think it's going to be really popular.

"Together with chief instructor Matt Loughlin, we decided it was a really good idea to get a Hobie Wave, because no one else really has got one in inland water in the south west. We decided to take the plunge and do it as a new thing."

Anyone wanting to take out the Hobie Wave for a session - which range from an hour to half a day - does not need formal qualifications, just a certain knowledge and experience of sailing.

An hour session costs £24 or £40 for two hours, while additional hours are on a sliding scale.

"It will depend on the conditions how good they have to be," explained Costa.

But he added that the beauty of the Wave was that even older youngsters would be able to take it out onto the water.

"One of the great things about Stithians is that although we have got beaches all around us, we are probably the only inland water from Bodmin to St Ives that does watersports in a safe environment where it can still be fun and exciting," he said.

The Hobie Wave is available for hire now and if it proves popular the centre will consider purchasing more.

Although sessions are not currently available to complete novices, the centre is in the process of getting instructors fully qualified to take people out.

Booking is strongly advised. For more information contact the centre on 01209 860301.
