Two of Pendennis Shipyard's most iconic 40m plus sailing yachts, Christopher and Rebecca, provided a dramatic end to a fantastic week of sailing in last month's St Barth's Bucket regatta.
Battling for the lead on the final day, the race culminated in a nail biting downwind leg of the clockwise course with both yachts at the head of the 40-strong regatta fleet.
The regatta was successful for both yachts, with Rebecca taking the title in the Les Elegantes des Mers class.
SY Christopher was completed at Pendennis' Falmouth facility early in 2011 and the 46m ketch flew through her first Atlantic crossing in 12 days, arriving in the Caribbean in good time to take part in the regatta.
The first St. Barths Bucket was sailed in 1995 with a fleet of 4 yachts; SARIYAH, the 131’ S & S ketch, Tom Taylor’s 108’ Ron Holland ketch, GLEAM, Nelson Doubleday’s 130’ Palmer Johnson ketch, MANDALAY and PARLAY, the Alden design 127’ Ketch.
Within a decade, the St. Barths Bucket expanded beyond all reasonable expectations. With a limit of 30 yachts required by the local Authorities to keep a handle on the event, the Bucket has been all but full every year since 2005.
In recent years, the fleet has overflowed with applicants even before the notice of race is published.
