Countdown to Falmouth Week

A new feature of Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week this year is the Falmouth Fun Night, sponsored by Golder Associates.

With a variety of planned activities taking place at Customs House Quay on Wednesday August, 12 this is a joint venture between Steve Nicholls, Chairman of the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association, and Dave Nicoll, local fundraiser for the RNLI. They explain: “We want to provide a better link between the sailing competitors out on the water and the local people and visitors who come into Falmouth to enjoy the atmosphere of Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week.

Our aim is to produce an evening of fun and games at the waterfront which everyone can enjoy.”

The Red Arrows RAF display team will start the evening at 6.15pm with their stunning show of aerobatics, sponsored by the Falmouth Harbour Commissioners. Expect the harbour to be especially full with boats full of spectators.

For those on shore, Falmouth main street will be closed to traffic from 11am to 11pm so that everyone can wander about freely, enjoy some late night shopping and the Church Street car park will be clear, so will provide an ideal vantage point, along with Greenbank, the Town quays and Castle Drive.

Extra parking is available at the Hornworks.

The PoFSA/RNLI team have a host of ideas for the evening. There will be a Wench Winching competition, using the dredge winches on local fishing boats to recover suitable ‘wenches’ in dinghies against the clock. Apparently Betty Stoggs herself may be involved.

Many a local boater has a trusty old British Seagull outboard engine, and there will be racing for dinghies with these classic motors – all you require to take part is a Seagull Outboard Motor and a boat to put it on! The RNLI plans to have its lifeboats alongside for everyone to see, and the Harbour Commissioners’ various craft will also be on view.

The evening will end with a ‘re-enactment’ of the Battle of Trafalgar between fleets from the Working Boat crews and the Falmouth Marine Band in inflatable dinghies. A Grand Ceremony is taking place in July, which will decide which crew will represent which side. Naval historians may be appalled at the show, but the battle promises to be great fun.

Radio Cornwall, with presenter Tiffany Truscott, will be on site and broadcasting live from the quayside from 6pm to 10pm.

After all this activity the evening continues at Events Square with performances from the very best of our local talent including Small Wonder, Three Minute Warning, Ice Cold Idiots and Polly Money and local music can also be enjoyed at The Moor where young community bands from Helston will be performing.

For more information on the Seagull Outboard Motor race please contact Dave Nicoll on 01326 210008. A full programme outlining all of the week’s events will be available from Falmouth Tourist Information Centre mid-July.
