Falmouth Week Champagne Day

Champagne Day in Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week, run by the Falmouth Town Regatta Committee, harks back to classic racing in the 50s when St Mawes yachtsman Lord Shawcross was competing against his friend Jack Silley, who owned Falmouth Docks.

Deciding on a private wager they broke away from the fleet until one of them came out on top; the loser presenting a case of champagne to the winner. The Race Officer’s comments are unrecorded.

This year the Champagne Day is moving midweek to Wednesday August 12, to provide a change of pace for the competitors and to link with the RNLI Fun Night at Customs House Quay that evening. The Champagne courses are longer coastal passages for the larger yachts, and more varied racing around the harbour buoys for the traditional craft and dinghies.

International engineering consultants Golder Associates, who have had an office in Cornwall since 2007 and Events Square since January 2009, have come on board as sponsors of these events. Golder Associates provide a range of services from its Falmouth office, including innovative, reliable and cost-efficient environmental and ground engineering solutions to a broad range of local, national and international clients in sectors including Mining, Waste Management, Land Regeneration, Power, Oil & Gas, Manufacturing and the Public Sector.

Nick Slade, manager of the Falmouth Office said: “Golder Associates is delighted to be associated with this wonderful local event by supporting the Champagne Day and the Falmouth Fun Night. It is great to be able to make a contribution back in to the community, as all of our staff live locally or in the county and we have a range of local clients too. We hope everyone has a great Falmouth Week. “ The Red Arrows display, which has been sponsored by Falmouth Harbour Commissioners, will open the RNLI Fun Night at 6.15pm, heralding an evening of fun and games at the waterfront. After competitions such as Wench Winching and Seagull outboard engine racing there will be a ‘re-enactment’ of the Battle of Trafalgar between Working Boat crews and the Falmouth Marine Band in inflatable dinghies. Radio Cornwall will be broadcasting live throughout the evening from the quayside.

Henri-Lloyd Falmouth Week runs from August 8-15 with racing for classics, offshore yachts, dayboats, traditional craft, dinghies and Falmouth working boats. There is a full Shoreside programme, including the carnival, Red Arrows, spectacular fireworks display and a wide range of evening activities around the waterfront.
