Pendennis Shipyard among the awards
Pendennis Shipyard from Falmouth has reached the final of the national Apprenticeship Awards - one of five finalists from the South West, the most from any region in the competition.
Pendennis Shipyard is a world-renowned Superyacht manufacturer. The company is committed to the Apprenticeship programme with apprentices making up a fifth of its workforce.
The company won the South West Large Employer of the Year' award at the South West Skills Awards held in Exeter, which qualified them to be considered for the national competition. Pendennis Shipyard will join 18 other finalists at the national Apprenticeship Awards Ceremony held on Thursday 10 July at the Royal Horticultural Hall in Central London.
Jill Carr, training manager at Pendennis Shipyard, said: "We are delighted that our hard work has been recognised by the LSC at a national level. Apprentices are vital to the success of Pendennis as we can build and retain a highly skilled workforce. Our apprentice scheme has been a huge success and has the support of all involved. We are keeping our fingers crossed for the Awards!"
Malcolm Gillespie, Regional Director of LSC South West, said: "We are delighted that Pendennis Shipyard has reached the final of the national Apprenticeship Awards and that the South West has more finalists than any other region. This is testament to the outstanding contribution businesses, apprentices and their training providers are making to raise the region's skills levels and improve productivity and competitiveness.
"Pendennis Shipyard has succeeded in raising the skills levels of their apprentices and I hope they prove to be positive role models to others who are considering employing apprentices."
The Awards are designed to recognise those employers who are successfully using Apprenticeships to improve business performance, and the hard work and the commitment of individuals currently on, or who have recently completed an Apprenticeship. This year there was a 40 per cent increase in entries for the national Apprenticeship Awards from 1000 to 1,400.
