Narrow boat built for mechanic's retirement

DESPITE there being hardly any canals in Cornwall that didn't stop a man from Penryn building one in the county for his retirement.
There was an unusual sight in Carnkie this morning as the 60ft long, 15 tonne narrow boat was craned onto a lorry at R & G Motors before it was transported to the Llangollen canal in Shropshire.
Richard Smalley, 58, of Belle Vue, Penryn, has spent the past four years building the boat in preparation for his retirement from his job as mechanic.
Richard said: "It has taken me four years but she looks great. I have done it bit by bit in my spare time, spending what money I had on it and then waiting until I had some more. It is the first time I have ever built a boat, it was hard work but good fun."
On Monday the boat, Just Do It, was on its way up to Shropshire where Richard and his partner Wendy will be joining it soon.
They plan to live on the boat for a while and hope to travel along all of the canals in Britain during their retirement.
"It will probably take us a while but we love being on the water and we will have plenty of time
