Volunteer lifeboat crew member honoured
A volunteer crew member from the Lizard lifeboat station has out-performed some 200 RNLI students from around the UK and Ireland to gain a prestigious training award.
Nick Pryer won the Paul Le Riche award after being named the RNLI's top student for 2006/07 in RYA shore-based distance learning courses.
The award is presented annually in memory of Jersey lifeboatman Mr Le Riche, who was tragically lost at sea in a fishing boat accident in 2001. At the time of his death, he was working towards his RYA coastal skipper and yachtmaster theory certificate on a distance learning course run by Ocean Training.
Nick won the award after achieving top marks in his theory examinations and completing the whole course in a very short time.
Dan Nicholson, from Ocean Training, presented Nick with his award at the annual Lizard lifeboat station crew dinner at the Polurrian Hotel, Mullion.
Commending Nick for his hard work and diligence, Mr Nicholson said winning the award was a "considerable achievement".
The annual dinner was attended by many of the crew, shore helpers, station officials and supporters at the Lizard.
Branch spokeswoman Clare Julier said the evening was an opportunity for all those involved with the Lizard station to get together and celebrate their achievements.
A raffle held during the evening raised £260 towards the new lifeboat fund.
