A Falmouth artist has donated one of her sought after paintings to the intrepid ocean adventurer Pete Goss after being awe struck by his journey aboard the Sprit of Mystery to Australia.
Eloise Wall, who creates stunning work in her studio in the idyllic surrounds of nearby Port Navas, has followed the story of the Goss family and their re-enactment voyage to Australia in the 37ft wooden fishing boat with fascination.
A high seas explorer herself, after setting sail over ten years ago for a life on the ocean, she was struck by the bravery and fortitude of the four men that spent months at sea aboard the Spirit of Mystery on it’s now famous trip to Australia. With feet, temporarily, back on land, Ellie has gone back to her first love, art, and decided to donate one of her sought after paintings to help fund Pete Goss’ future projects.
The artist had a chance to hand the painting, entitled, “A Prayer for a Small Boat on a Big Sea”, named after a Sir Francis Drake penned piece, written the 1500’s, over in person when she was invited to clamber onboard the “Spirit” in Newlyn at the weekend The inspiration for the voyage of the Spirit of Mystery, was the story of seven Cornishmen, who 100 years previously had sat in the Star Inn, in Newlyn and had openly planned the same trip in the same kind of vessel.
Those brave men had landed in Australia to seek their fortunes in much harder times
