Falmouth assistant harbour master's warning to skippers

Boat skippers have been warned to keep to the speed limit and be aware of the dangers of excessive wash affecting other people on the water.

Falmouth's new assistant harbour master Duncan Paul said that safety was paramount as more and more people took up water-related hobbies.

He said all boats had the potential to generate waves, or wash. Speeding boats could create a dangerous amount of wash, which could cause injury or damage to smaller boats, canoeists and other water users.

Boats on moorings were particularly vulnerable to wash.

It is an offence under the harbour bylaws to put other people in danger by navigating with insufficient care, which includes generation excessive wash where it might affect others.

His warning came as many people took to the water during a sunny August Bank Holiday weekend.
