"An opportunity to put Falmouth on the world stage" was how town councillors described the town hosting the Finn Gold Cup sailing event in 2012.
Falmouth won a bid to host the Olympic qualifier, planned for May 2012, and now plans are in place to showcase the event into an international festival for the town.
Members of the Finn Gold Cup steering group Ray Stedman, Andy Tyler and Sam Groom gave a presentation to the town council on Monday night. They detailed plans of the event, which includes the British Open and the Finn Gold Cup, where six emerging sailing nations will qualify for the London 2012 Olympics.
Mr Stedman, from the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, said that with Ben Ainslie, a four-time Olympic gold-medallist who learned to sail in Restronguet, involved in the project, it would generate massive publicity for the town.
"The national sailing community will be watching quite closely," he said.
Planned to coincide with the event, which has a budget of £280,000, is a big screen for people to watch the competition, a flag parade from all the competing nations, a live music festival and a firework display.
Town councillors gave the event their full support, but did not need to worry about financial contributions until they did their budget.
Oliver Cramp, who also sails, said: "This is an opportunity to put Falmouth on the world stage and it is worthy of the strongest possible support from this council."
