Boost for Cornwall maritime companies

Maritime businesses in Cornwall are to get a PR boost after Cornwall Marine Network appointed former media consultant Georgia White as its new Marketing Executive.

Georgia, 39, from Helston, will assist CMN members with their publicity needs, ensuring they promote their businesses as effectively as possible and maximise their marketing potential.

She joins CMN’s team with a distinguished media background. After 10 years as a news and feature writer for the national media in London, she moved to Cornwall in 2005. She has since worked with the South West’s business sector on a range of writing, editing and PR assignments on a regional and national level.

A keen sailor, Georgia arrives with a good understanding of the industry. She has some 32,000 nautical miles under her belt after participating in the then BT Global Challenge Yacht Race.

She arrives at an exciting time in CMN’s history. It has won substantial new Convergence Fund contracts which in the last six months have enabled it to expand to new offices at Falmouth Business Park, offer further marketing and training services to its members and bolster its training department with the expertise of a number of new staff. Georgia said: “The Network and its members have plenty of great things to shout about, so I shall be kept busy. I look forward to using and imparting my writing, public relations and marketing knowledge to support Cornwall’s maritime industry in its economic growth.”

She will be working with CMN’s Marketing Manager Tim Bowerbank to help members improve their marketing campaigns through networking events, workshops and one-to-one mentoring sessions. Using traditional marketing tools, online media and embracing social media opportunities, Tim and Georgia are confident they can make a tangible difference.

Tim said: “Georgia's extensive background in journalism and PR, combined with her maritime experiences, will bring a new level of marketing support for the members of Cornwall Marine Network; supporting them with best practice methods for promoting their products and services locally, nationwide and into export markets.”

CMN is a not-for-profit membership organisation working with Cornwall’s vibrant marine business sector. It supports more than 300 members – from boat builders to surf schools and marine engineers to yacht charters - and helps them grow through marketing and training support.

Chief Executive Paul Wickes said: Cornwall Marine Network has a track record of innovation on behalf of its’ marine businesses, ensuring marine sector specific services are continually developed and improved to benefit our member businesses in an ever increasing way. Georgia’s excellent expertise will add a new dimension to our member services and also ensure the good work of CMN is understood by a wider audience.”

One of Georgia’s first tasks is to help publish CMN’s 2010 Marine Guide and Directory. The comprehensive guide, due out this month, highlights the wealth and range of enterprise within a marine sector that supports some 14,000 Cornish jobs.
