New brochure about Cornish ports

The South West Regional Ports Association (SWRPA) has launched a new brochure on ports in the South West under the banner “Gateways for Growth”.

At a lunch reception held in Torquay, the SWRPA Chairman and Chief Executive of Cattewater Harbour Commissioners, Captain Tim Charlesworth said: “It is a great pleasure to launch “Gateways for Growth” and an exciting moment for the Association.

“What we wanted to do was capture not only the economic contribution that ports make to the South West, but also the opportunities that our industry creates.

“The focus is the South West Regional Development Agency area. It has more coastline than any other English region – 700 miles in total. We have an industry which supports more than 32,000 jobs. But it is not just about cargo, important though that is. We also support the leisure, cruise and fishing industries. We are key links for passenger ferries to the Continent. You can find every type of port activity here.” Welcoming a cross section of representatives from all sides of the marine and business community, Capt Charlesworth said: “Ports really matter. We hope this will be the beginning of a new maritime partnership. The information in this brochure will be used to present our case to the planners and everyone who has an influence on the viability of the South West.”

Also present at the launch was Mr Stephen Bracewell, Chief Executive of Harwich Haven Authority Chairman of the British Ports Association, which has strong links with the SWRPA. “The regional agenda is more important than ever”, said Mr Bracewell, “and we were delighted to work with the SWRPA in demonstrating the value of this vital industry. I was struck by the sheer range of activities represented by the Association’s members – long may they continue to contribute to the prosperity and well being of the area.”
