The Restronguet Sailing Club and the Flushing and Mylor Gig Club came together for an evening of shanty singing to raise funds for the RNLI.
The nationally famous group ‘Kimber’s Men’ were in Falmouth and staying with Club member Steve Hutt, who asked them to play a gig at the sailing club for a great cause.
Kimber’s Men’s are great supporters of the RNLI – their latest record “Don’t Take the Heroes” tells the story of the loss with all crew of the Penlee lifeboat Soloman Browne in 1981 – so they agreed readily.
On a fine summer’s evening local farmer Tom Laity’s trailer, covered in hay bales, was pressed into service as a stage at the edge of the beach, lights and sound system were erected, and nearly 200 members of the sailing and gig clubs gathered to listen and join in the singing.
Such was the atmosphere that evening visitors came to join in, and local boats out for an evening trip came by to listen and watch.
Thanks to sales of tickets, bar profit and the excellent barbecue provided by a team from Restronguet SC, a substantial sum was raised and donated to the Falmouth RNLI Crew Training Appeal.
