1950’s Dolphin Engine makes a comeback

An old mill site on the outskirts of St Austell, Cornwall has become the new home of Dolphin Marine Engines. The hand-built engines were initially designed in the 1950s by Peter Hogan for use in motorcycles and the classic Berkeley motor car.

The first marine version was developed for racing hydroplanes in the 1960s and despite being a 350 cc engine it won the 500 cc British hydroplane championship two years running.

New Owners, GT Jones and Co, are already getting to grips with the latest challenges facing two stroke engines and are collaborating with Dolphin's former owner David Chapman to combine classic engineering with cutting-edge technologies to bring the new Dolphin mark VIII to the market place.

Patrick Clancy said: "We have immediate plans to update the starter generator and our biggest challenge will be working within new emissions regulations. There are many other developments in the two stroke field that we will harness and hope will make this modern version of the classic Dolphin as popular as ever."

Dolphin enthusiasts need not worry as an extensive range of spare parts for the Mark VII and Series II engines can still be purchased by contacting Patrick Clancy on 01726 824726 or email info@dolphinengines.co.uk
