Youngsters help those at sea
This year visitors to the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth have been able to send some festive cheer to those away at sea for Christmas, with the help of The Mission to Seafarers.
Since mid-November, budding artists visiting the Maritime Museum have been designing and making cards for the many people working at sea over Christmas, far away from their homes and loved ones.
Later this month The Mission to Seafarers will be shipping their artwork and messages out to the sailors and mariners in time for Christmas.
Inspired by the thought-provoking poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, Christmas at Sea, the activity has been running since November and finishes on Sunday December 16.
Children have also been able to enter their cards into an age-categorised competition, to win free annual passes to the Museum and tickets for the Museum's new family film programme. Judged by Penny Phillips from the Mission to Seafarers and Father John Savage, the winners will be announced on Saturday December 15. The overall winning artwork will also be exhibited on the Museum's website.
Debs Rogers, education assistant at the museum, said: "I have asked the children taking part in this activity to think about mariners who are far from their families this Christmas and to draw and write whatever comes to mind. And, I must say, we've seen lots of beautifully made cards and some very endearing messages."
