World championships for working boats

This month's Falmouth Working Boats World Championships will have an added local flavour with the support of a Cornish brewery.

Competitors will be able to quench their thirst with the popular beers of Truro-based Skinners Brewery, who have been appointed a major sponsor of the three-day event in Carrick Roads from June 22-24.

Now in its third year, the action-packed event will comprise five races, for the two classes of large and small working boats, and is expected to involve around 30 entrants.

The Falmouth Working Boats, with several well over 100 years old, traditionally dredge for oysters using sail power alone during the winter and then race in regattas during the summer. The World Championships are organised by Falmouth Working Boats Association and supported by St Mawes Sailing Club and St Mawes Social Club.

"The championships are essentially a fun event, with no realistic prospect of attracting any competitors from further afield," said Brian Chenoweth, who has a part share in the 112-year-old 28ft Florence, built by William Peters, and whose company, Rhos Construction and Rhosnoweth Developments, are also sponsors.

"But we do feel justified in using the world' title as the boats are a genuinely unique fleet and so the winners are by definition the best in the world!"

He added: "We are very pleased to have Skinners on board as a major sponsor. It's good to have a local brewery supporting local interests and Skinners have a great reputation for helping events go with a real buzz."

Brewery managing director Steve Skinner commented: "These championships are truly an event in a league of their own, with so much history attached to the boats and such a great spectacle when they are in full sail.

"We are delighted to be involved. The championships are rapidly becoming a very firmly established date on the Cornish sailing calendar and, who knows, their status could even start to get on a par with the Isles of Scilly world gig racing championships."
