Devon harbours are just fantastic
There are few places to rival Dartmouth for boating activities. A stroll along the quayside at any time is enough to realise just how much sailing means to the town and the estuary.
Yachts and boats have been coming to Dartmouth for centuries and the river is steeped in history.
Take a pleasure boat up and down the tranquil River Dart to Totnes, or cruise along the South Devon coast. Hire a self-drive motor boat to explore the upper reaches of the river. Take a day afloat with a sailing school.
In late summer, the annual royal regatta takes place and includes everything from rowing boats to offshore cruisers. Yacht race classes offered range from IRC to old gaffer to dinghy.
Salcombe
ICC Salcombe, the island cruising club is a sailing and sail training centre which offers sailing holidays, short and weekend breaks with tuition or RYA courses for beginner to yachtmaster, for children and adults. The ICC is based in the Salcombe and Kingsbridge estuary, and offers sailing both in a protected tidal harbour and at sea. The fleet is one of the largest in the UK, from single-handed dinghies suitable for both children and adults to high performance keel boats and sea going yachts.
The ICC has been teaching people for more than 50 years. It is a Royal Yachting Association-recognised sail training centre teaching people of all ages and capabilities.
A range of courses including all RYA levels and ICC progressive courses are available. A fleet of dinghies, keelboats and sea going yachts are available.
The Salcombe inlet is tidal and, therefore, ideal for gaining sailing experience. Its position means that the weather is warm as well as being the perfect starting point for cruising to France, the Channel Islands and even the Isles of Scilly, (see also page 20-21)
Visitors can hire a boat for the whole day or part of the day or ask the ICC to put together a programme to suit individual needs.
Brixham
Brixham is at the forefront of Britain's fishing industry, sheltered by walls of the outer harbour, providing a safe anchor for the yachts in the marina. Oxen Cove is a popular launch point for dinghies.
Alongside the quay is the Golden Hind, a full size replica of the ship that Sir Francis Drake sailed around the world in during the late 16th century.
Ilfracombe
Ilfracombe is a Victorian seaside town on the north Devon coast but with a yacht club formed in 1962 whose members sail the Bristol Channel. In 1972, the club moved to the old Seamen's Bethel.
The club is proud of its reputation within the Bristol Channel Yachting Conference as one of the most friendly yacht clubs in the area.
Ilfracombe Yacht Club welcomes visiting yachts and provides a lounge, changing rooms for men and women, toilets and showers and a telephone.
