Admiral Nelson planning appeal

3:10pm Tuesday 7th September 2010

The company that was refused planning permission to build 46 apartments on the Admiral Nelson site on Bar Road will have their appeal heard on September 14.

Acorn Property Group wants to build 46 apartments on the site. When the company took over the site, planning consent already existed for a block of 16 flats inside a building with a flat roof.

An “Admiral Nelson Action Group” was formed to voices fears over the size and look of the development plans, with some saying the pub would become a "monstrous box".

The scheme was subsequently refused by Carrick's planning committee, which led to Acorn coming back with revised plans, reducing the height by half a storey.

The new plans, still for 46 apartments, were then opposed, by a vote of five to one, by town councillors and then refused by Cornwall Council.

The former pub on Bar Road closed in October 2004 and has been steadily falling into disrepair ever since. Racist graffiti appeared this summer, triggering a horrified reaction from the site's neighbours.

An inspector has now been appointed by the Department of Communities and Local Government to rule on the company’s bid to build.

The public enquiry will start at 10am on Tuesday, Spetmber 14 at City Hall in Truro. The company’s statement and grounds of appeal and the statement from Cornwall Council are available to view on the planning page of the council’s website at www.cornwall.gov.uk.
